SLM508 Learning Technologies taught me how to harness the power of social media to collaborate with my library colleagues. One way I accomplished this goal during class was to create a professional blog. My blog posts demonstrate my commitment to continuous collaboration and professional development as a school media specialist.
For example, I networked with other school libraries and classrooms by following their blogs and websites. This process taught me that digital tools are a powerful way to collaborate with the school community because it removes the barriers that exist between school and home. This inspired me to create my own classroom website to facilitate access to information at any time of day or night. Now, families are able to see pictures of class events and use resources to support student learning at home, regardless of their ability to actually visit our classroom during the school day.

My blog also demonstrates my commitment to participating in a social and intellectual network of learners. For example, I created a VoiceThread presentation about the power of and the emerging tools available for digital storytelling in a library. My blog allowed me to share my new knowledge and resources with my library colleagues.
Looking ahead to my future as a media specialist in MCPS, I know that I am joining a strong professional community. I have participated in their online collaboration sites and have had the privilege of collaborating with media specialists in various schools both in person and online. Continuing these relationships will be an invaluable resource as I transition to my new role in a school.
