I created a leadership analysis and professional development plan during SLM501 Administration and Leadership. This assignment helped me better understand my strengths as a leader and my personal leadership style. One of my strengths was the fact that I already participate in professional organizations such as the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL) and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). In addition, I read professional publications such as School Library Journal and follow multiple online resources, blogs, and professional learning networks. I also have a blog of my own to communicate my personal experiences and ideas with other members of the library community.
During this assignment, I identified specific areas of need and developed a plan for my ongoing professional growth. My main goals were to focus on emerging technologies available to schools and lead other teachers in incorporating these trends into their own instruction. My attached professional development plan outlines the specific professional publications, conferences, and online resources I will use to accomplish these goals. I designed my plan to guide me through my first year as a media specialist so that I can be an effective instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, program administrator, and leader within my school community.
During my first year as a media specialist, I plan to use my ongoing research to improve my instruction and provide professional development for the teachers at my school. This collaboration with teachers will help create a clear, school-wide vision of using technology and promoting literacy throughout the community. Many of the articles I selected in my professional development plan also prove the importance of school libraries in relation to literacy, 21st century skills, and technology. This ensures that my continued growth supports my role as an instructional specialist and leader within the school. That way, I can frame the school library as a central instructional hub and source of professional development for teachers.
